World Chambers Competition deadline draws near Paris, 16 February 2009 The Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka accept an award in 2007
Chambers of commerce and industry who think they’ve got what it takes to win a prestigious World Chambers Competition award have until the end of February to submit their entries. The Competition is the only global awards programme that gives chambers of commerce and industry a platform to showcase originality, demonstrate their resolve to strengthen small- and medium-sized enterprises, and improve member services. The deadline for entries is 1 March 2009. In this year’s edition of the biennial Competition, Mohi'aldin Yahya Hakami, General Manager of the IT and Information Sector at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry is vying for the title of Best Networking Project. “The Competition gives regional chambers of commerce and industry like ours the chance to portray our experience serving the private sector and developing strategies that will support the economy of Jeddah, and ultimately the kingdom of Saudi Arabia,“ he said.
In 2009, chambers are being given a chance to shine in a number of new categories designed to stimulate entrepreneurial creativity and inspire other chambers.
This year’s categories are:
• Best Unconventional Project • Best Small Business Project • Best International Project • Best Networking Project
A special recognition award will also be given for the best project from a chamber of a developing country.
"The inspiring exchange of ideas and the inclusively beneficial nature of the World Chambers Competition ensure that ultimately every chamber is a winner.” said Rona Yircali, Chairman of the World Chambers Federation.
Four finalists for each of the categories will present their projects to the international judging panel at the 6th World Chambers Congress on 3-5 June in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
A panel of international judges will face the challenge of short-listing four finalists for each of the categories. The jury comprises representatives from transnational, national and local chambers of commerce appointed by WCF and includes former winners of the World Chambers Competition.
Since its inception, the competition has produced a large number of case studies. In the 2007 competition, WCF received 55 dossiers from 38 countries. To learn more about the competition or to submit your project, visit: www.worldchamberscompetition.com |

RP remains one of world's most attractive off-shoring destinations despite global economic crisis |
|
Sunday, 18 January 2009 |
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo stressed today that the Philippines remains one of the most attractive off-shoring investment destinations in the world today despite the present global economic meltdown.
In her message at the 9th e-Services Global Sourcing Conference and Exhibition today (Feb. 9) at the SMX convention center, SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City, the President, who was introduced by Trade Secretary Peter Favila as the "original ICT (information and communication technology) brand manager," spelled out to some 2,000 participants from all over the world the reasons why the Philippines still ranks among the most-favored destinations of business process outsourcing (BPO) in the world.
"Our BPO industry continues to boom as global cost-cutting is sent to outsourcing. The Philippines is ranked among the most attractive off-shoring destinations in the world because of cost competitiveness and more importantly the country's highly trainable, English proficient, IT-enabled quality manpower," the President said.
The President said the number of workers in the BPO sector has ballooned from only 4,000 in 2001 to 400,000 today, mainly due to government's rational and strategic act to foster a digital culture that maximized the benefits of ICT.
She added that the government concentrated on three areas, namely, building of physical infrastructure that included telecommunications and network infrastructure; ensuring an appropriate policy and legal environment so as to create an environment to grow ICT; and, development of human capital to close the digital divide.
She said that the Cyber Corridor in her super regions economic development plan has been "lengthened" from Metro Manila, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu and Davao to include Baguio, Dagupan Tarlac, Pampanga,Metro Bulacan, Metro Rizal, Metro Cavite, Metro Laguna, Metro Batanagas, Dumaguete and Cagayan de Oro.
"BPO and e-services are key drivers of the economy, generating investments and jobs, alleviating poverty and improving the lives of the people. We are proud to be among the world's leaders in these fields," the President said.
Moreover, the President said the Philippines is in a better position to weather the current financial crisis because of the "rebooting" of the economy several years before there was a hint of a financial crisis. |
